Timing The Lead

The timing of your lead is dependent on the type of steal you are attempting. In today’s video blog post, we highlight 2 different steal situations, and the timings that work for a successful steal.
Straight steal

The base runner will lead when the pitcher is at the top of her pitching motion, so by the time the ball is out of the pitchers hand your runner will be just leaving the bag with her back foot.

The Bunt Lead

This lead is used when the batter is going to bunt the ball.  Wait to take the lead until the ball is in flight and approaching the hitting zone. This way, the base runner can get her lead when the ball is coming into the zone. She can be off the base and see the ball down onto the ground, never stopping her momentum for a clean run into second base.

If the ball is popped up, the runner is not very far off the base and can get back safely.
